Proof of Life Starring: Russell Crowe, Meg Ryan, David Morse, Pamela Reed, David Caruso Director: Taylor Hack ford With the background of Tecala, in Latin America, Proof of Life is a tense action film about kidnapping and ransom. After the end of the Cold War, rebel groups had to find a new way of getting money to fund their activities which were earlier funded by Communist countries. They turn to kidnapping and demanding exorbitant sums of ransom. Peter Bowman (David Morse) is an engineer in Tecala who is kidnapped by the rebels. They demand a sum of $3 million as a ransom. Peter's company is broke and had no insurance of ransom. Panic stricken, his wife Alice (Meg Ryan) and sister Janis (Pamela Reed) decide to take the situation into their own hand. Alice hires freelance negotiator, an expert in kidnap and ransom cases, Terry Throne (Russell Crowe) to help her. What follows this taut drama with Terry barging with the rebel leader while Peter, who was held hostage in the Andes mountains, is shifted to Amazonian jungles. Meanwhile, Alice and Terry come close together, bound by the tension they experience. When negotiations break down, desperate Terry decides to act quickly and decisively. Along with his friend Dino (David Caruso), he plans a rescue operation. Do they succeed? What happens to Alice and Terry's feelings? Proof of Life's commendable points are its cinematography which captures the beauty of Andes mountains and waterfalls and its realistic direction which has rebels talking in their native language. Yet, one wonders why the romantic love angle has been introduced, detracting from the main story. It seems an unnecessary intrusion. Good action in the thick Amazonian jungles makes for interesting viewing Story: Good Direction: Good Acting: Average Cinematography: Good Overall Rating: Average |
