The mighty genie
Faisal accepted his award and stood proudly on
the stage with his parents while all the other students and their parents
clapped cheerfully. It was the final result day and he was declared the first
position holder in class VII. After the function was over, Faisal and his
parents got on their motor bike to go home.
On their way, Faisal asked his father, "Dad, what is my reward?"
"What do you want?" His father replied.
"I want some money, Dad."
"Ok, as you wish, his father brought out his purse and gave him some money.
"Thank you." Said Faisal while pocketing it quickly.
The following day, after school, he went to the market. He saw many things there
but nothing held his interest. Suddenly, his eyes caught something really
different. It was an antique lamp. Eager to buy it, Faisal asked its price and
then after some bargaining bought it for Rs 200.
When he reached home, later than usual, his mother asked him the reason for the
delay. He did't want to tell her the real reason so he lied that he had gone to
a friend's place for combined study.
"Ok, but next time don't lose track of time. You may go now," his mother said
before getting back to her work.
Faisal went to his room and locked the door. He took out the antique lamp from
his school bag and placed it in his cupboard. Suddenly he got an idea. He took
out the antique lamp and started rubbing it as he had read in the story of 'Alladin'.
After about 15 minutes, he noticed smoke coming out of it and then a mighty
genie materialized from that smoke.
In the beginning Faisal was scared. But he was also very happy because he had
succeeded in his purpose of bringing out a genie from his lamp.
"I have come to fulfil your desire," said the genie, "but I can accept only
three of your wishes. And remember, if you want your second wish to be fulfilled
then your first wish will be wiped out. And your second wish will be wiped out
in place of your third wish."
Faisal thought for a while. After some time he said, "My father is a clerk in a
bank. I wish he'd be promoted."
"OK, your wish will be fulfilled soon," replied the mighty genie. Saying this he
disappeared in the wink of an eye.
Next day Faisal's father came home from office and told Faisal and his mother,
"I am being transferred to Lahore with a promotion. But I don't want to go to
Lahore. I don't care whether I am promoted or not!"
Upon hearing this, Faisal went to his room and locked the door. He took out his
lamp and began rubbing it. After some time the mighty genie appeared. Faisal
said "I want my second wish to be fulfilled in place of my first. I want a car
for my father."
"OK!" Replied the mighty genie and disappeared.
Next day Faisal's father came home and said to his son and wife, "I have a
surprise for you."
"What surprise, Dad?" Faisal asked pretending to be excited.
"My promotion and transfer have been withdrawn and instead I have been given a
car." Said his father.
"Yahoo!" Faisal exclaimed excitedly.
After some days Faisal's father got badly injured in a car accident. When they
reached the hospital the doctor told them that his father was in a serious
condition.
Leaving his mother at the hospital, Faisal went home, took out the magic lamp
and started rubbing it again. After some time the mighty genie appeared. Faisal
said to him, "It seems that time has arrived for me to make my final wish. My
father has been injured badly and I want him to be healthy again. You can take
away the car."
"OK, but remember, this is your last wish according to the agreement. I will
never return. But before going I want to ask you one thing, and that is do you
know why this situation arose?"
"No, I don't know," replied Faisal.
"Listen Faisal! I want to tell you two things. First is that health is wealth
and the second is that we must be content with whatever we have been given by
the God. We may wish for all that is best but we get things which are in our
luck otherwise it would never come our way. You wanted promotion for your father
and a car, but it was your wish not that of the God," the genie said and stopped
for a while. Then he continued, "and your last wish is being granted because it
is God's will that your father recovers". Suddenly, a loud sound came and the
room got all smoky. With this the mighty genie disappeared.
The genie was gone but Faisal had understood his lesson. Have you, too?
